It is September again, so thousands of students are preparing for a new academic year. The “kotleven” (students hostel) is synonymous with freedom, parties and fun. They do not pay much attention to the dangers that their new environment entails. Nevertheless, students can easily reduce the risk of fire. A few tips.
Some of the tips below seem very logical, but as a student you are busy with assignments, deadlines, lessons and of course the fun things of life. You do not like the ringing finger and over anxious parents. However, these simple tips can help you to ensure that your student time does not go up in smoke.
- Be careful with candles
Blow out all candles when you leave the room. Do not place them too close to flammable material such as curtains. Make sure the candles are stable.
The fire at the Switel Hotel in Antwerp (1994) is an example of how things can go terribly wrong with candles. - Be careful with the fryer
Never leave the fryer unattended. Pull itout when you have finished frying.
If the chip boiler catches fire, never extinguish with water. Use a lid or fire blanket. See what happens when you extinguish a fryer with water. - Never switch off smoke detectors
Smoke alarms alert you in case of danger and can save your life. - Smoke outside
Smoking in a student room is not allowed. If you do, be sure to stay away from your bed and make sure that your cigarette is well extinguished when you leave. - Take care with the barbecue
Take your time and never use fire accelerators. Put a bucket of sand ready to extinguish, it needed to be. Make sure the barbecue is stable and out of the wind. Never barbecue inside or in a poorly ventilated room, such as a small car. The CO that is released is poisonous. - Prepare for fire
View the evacuation plan that hangs on your wall in your hallway. Locate the nearest emergency exits and plot your escape route. Provide a second route as a backup. Do not leave anything lying around on the escape route and keep keys of closed doors or windows in the vicinity. Count the number of doors from your room to the emergency exit, so that you can find your way in case of heavy smoke development.
We wish you an unforgettable and fire safe student time. Enjoy it!
