What does the law say about fire prevention at work?

FonsFire Safety

With a law article and a Royal Decree, the obligations regarding fire prevention at workplaces are laid down. We understand that you do not have time to go through the legal texts, so we summarize some important points for you.

6 themes of fire prevention in the law

In the law, fire prevention at work is divided into six themes:

1. Prevention of fire risks
2. Evacuation of those present
3. Fire fighting
4. Construction of buildings
5. Periodical checks
6. Training of employees

For point 4 let yourself be assisted by your architect and the fire department. Periodical checks of machines and installations are carried out by specialized firms. Safety4All gladly supports you on the other points.

Start with a risk analysis

To create a fire-safe working environment you need to know whether there are fire risks, where the possible risks are, how likely they are to manifest, what the consequences may be and how you can disable or restrict them. This is done during a fire audit with accompanying risk analysis.

According to the law, the risk analysis must be regularly updated so that changes are taken into account.

Preventive rules

In addition, the law states that you as an employer must draw up a general fire prevention policy. That comes down to:

  1. Prevent fire
You are obliged to set up a firefighting service, regardless of the number of employees in your company. This service has the task of avoiding the emergence of a fire, facilitating evacuation and extinguishing or controlling a starting fire.
  2. Ensure safety and evacuate quickly
Your building must be equipped with a number of evacuation routes, (emergency) exits and evacuation plans.
  3. Combat fire quickly and efficiently
You must provide equipment that allows the detection, detection, extinguishing, limiting of harmful effects and facilitating the intervention of the emergency services.
  4. Restrict harmful consequences
This relates to the construction of your buildings.
  5. To facilitate interception of emergency services

To achieve this, you need an intervention file. This includes an evacuation plan, a list of available protective equipment, the location of electrical installations and the fire detection center.

Internal emergency plan

Each employer must draw up an internal emergency plan containing procedures relating to the tasks of the fire service, the evacuation of persons, evacuation exercises, the use of protective equipment and the informing and training of personnel.

We support you in drawing up your emergency plan.

Training and information of employees

Every employee must have the knowledge that allows him to avoid fire, identify fire risks, give warning and evacuate. That is why you should organize an evacuation exercise at least once a year.
We provide professional training to your staff.
