According to a test purchase, not all fire blankets are suitable for extinguishing a burning fire. A simple towel would be a better alternative. However, during our training sessions we experience that fire blankets are very suitable to extinguish a burning person. It is important that the correct technique is used.
A test purchase was published in December 2014 with a devastating article about fire blankets. 13 of the 16 blankets did not endure the fire test with a burning fire. With wet towels the fire could be extinguished.
However, during our courses we still use (high-quality) fire blankets. We do this because they are a very efficient way to extinguish a burning person. The condition here is that the correct technique has to be used.
You have to proceed as follows:
- Tighten the blanket so that your hands are protected from fire
- Cover the flames
- Cover the person so that there is no air under the blanket
Rub the body from top to bottom
During our workshops you will have the chance to practice this technique on a fire doll. The participants find this always very useful and instructive.
